A press conference was held Tuesday by the American Civil Liberties Union of Kansas and Western Missouri, The Kansas National Organization for Women, MainStream Coalition and Planned Parenthood of Kansas and Mid-Missouri at the state capitol over the danger of the new abortion restriction bills the Kansas legislature had recently passed.
Gary Brunk of the American Civil Liberties Union of Kansas and Western Missouri, Elise Higgins of The Kansas National Organization for Women, Brandi Fisher of MainStream Coalition and Peter Brownlie of Planned Parenthood of Kansas and Mid-Missouri denounce the Kansas Legislature’s passage of HB 2253, this year’s Omnibus Abortion Restriction Bill (which also includes the provisions from SB 141, a gender-based abortion ban perpetuating racial stereotypes/profiling) and SB 142, “Let Doctors Lie,” and urge Governor Brownback to veto the harmful and invasive bills.
The four organizations, each an advocate for reproductive rights and health care access, gathered with community leaders for a press conference in the Capitol to decry Kansas politicians playing doctor in the statehouse on the taxpayer’s dime, legislating government intrusion and mandating that Kansas doctors must lie to patients. Both bills have been passed by the Legislature and are waiting to be signed by Governor Brownback.
HB 2253, the Omnibus Abortion Restriction Bill, is a 70-page sweeping overhaul of the state’s abortion restriction statutes containing no fewer than 40 provisions.
SB 142, “Let Doctors Lie,” jeopardizes the doctor/patient relationship and incentivizes the omission of critical medical information from conversations between doctors and patients.
SB 141 bans gender–based abortions, perpetuating racial stereotypes.
