Brownback praises federal funding for NBAF

Gov. Sam Brownback

Governor Sam Brownback says he’ll work with the legislature to come up with additional state funds to support a new federal bio-defense lab at Kansas State University.

At a press conference Wednesday afternoon, Brownback said he’s pleased with President Barack Obama’s decision to include $714 million in his budget proposal to build The National Bio- And Agro-Defense Facility.

Brownback says the state has agreed to pay 20 percent of the costs when the state was chosen by The Department Of Homeland Security for the new location.

The state has already issued $105 million dollars in bonds to build the facility, and the Kansas Bio-Science Authority has contributed $35 million.

“Its a large chunk of resources this is a key federal security project and we are very pleased to see this in the president’s budget and its quite important for us to move forward with this project,” Brownback said.  He says congress has already appropriated close to $200 million for the lab.
