Egypt’s opposition preparing to contest elections

CAIRO (AP) — Egypt’s leading liberal opposition group says it is preparing to contest the upcoming parliamentary elections expected later this year — a move that some members say is a step back from its earlier call for boycott.

The National Salvation Front said on Thursday that it will continue to press the ruling Islamic regime to provide guarantees for fair and free elections.

The coalition of liberal parties, youth groups and secular-minded politicians claims the Islamist government is manipulating the election system to ensure another victory.

Islamist parties won three-fourths of the seats in parliament in an election last year. The parliament was later dissolved by court order.

The coalition said it is still trying to create the conditions for the elections to be “an expression of popular will, not falsifying it.”
