April 20, 2013-The Emporia State football team wrapped up their 2013 spring practices with the annual spring game in front of nearly 500 fans on Saturday night on Jones Field at Welch Stadium.
The night began with members of last fall’s Kanza Bowl team formally receiving their championship rings.
On the field action began with a ten minute live scrimmage highlighted offensively by a 59 yard touchdown strike from Brent Wilson to Austin Willis.
Corben Jones threaded the needle for a touchdown for one of the highlights during the goal line stand.
The offense also won the You Make the Call session two possessions to one. Four lucky fans – Jacob Stade and Bob Wietharn on offense and John Tetuan and Scott Willis on defense – called plays for three series. The offense got credited for the win with a first down while a stop on three downs was a victory for the defense.
Deveon Dinwiddie returned a kick-off 75 yards for a touchdown during the special team session.
After a session of seven on seven, the offense was placed in three late game situations and scored on all three.
The final session consisted of a fan from the stands, Shannon Harden, getting the opportunity to kick a 25 yard field goal that was just short.
The Hornets will open the 2013 season on September 5 at Fort Hays State. The home opener is slated for September 12 against Neb.-Kearney.
Two members of Kanza Bowl Championship team were not able to attend – wide receiver Shjaun Richardson was competing at the Kansas Relays for the Hornet track and field team while it was announced that quarterback Tyler Eckenrode is playing football for the STU Northside Bulls in the Swedish Football League
