Shawnee Heights Middle School students got their first look at a final art project they’ve been working on since the beginning of the school year.

To celebrate Earth Day, students recycled Topeka Capital Journal newspapers into spirals representing the color wheel.

The project was to teach students lessons on color theory.

Students rolled the paper, painted sticks and rolled them up in spirals.

The spirals also represented the color wheel.

The art project had over 400 students take part with more than 55 hundred spirals,  but in order to keep the size of the finished art smaller they were not able to use all of the spirals made and will hang them as smaller pieces of art.

The school plans on doing another Earth Day project next year as well.
