A calm Sunday evening on one Topeka street when a rolling gun battle speeds down a typically quiet street.
Home security footage shows a dark SUV speeding down Brookside Drive at 6:44 p.m. Not long after police received numerous reports of a rolling gun battle.
Larry Selk says he was inside when two cars came barreling down the street; gun shots whizzing past kids playing outside.
“The kids are used to everybody watching out for them here so they’re not paying any attention to somebody speeding through here real bad so that’s the bad thing,” Selk said. “Well shooting is the bad thing, but just the speed of the vehicles was bad , you know.”
Topeka Police searched the area for two cars, one dark SUV and another light, possibly silver car.
The man who gave Kansas First News this security footage didn’t want to talk on camera, but did say he’s happy nobody was hurt.
The people who live along this street have been here decades, they’ve heard gun shots before…
“We here a lot of gun shots over here, especially at night time,” said Teresa Smith who adds she has lived in the area her entire life. Smith said something just in front of her home has never happened before.
“That’s the whole thing that bothers us here is the kids, cause the kids were all out here playing in the road you know and the guys going 50 miles per hour through here … not safe,” said Selk.
The man who’s cameras captured the images says he plans to turn the video over to police.
And neighbors say they plan to stay put, determined not to let a scary evening shake the foundation of a close-knit street.
