The community is working to put an end to this obesity epidemic.

The 2013 health rankings lists Shawnee County as 70th out of 120 counties statewide for overall health.

After those rankings came out, one Topeka woman is taking on the challenge to get Topeka to work it out.

For over ten years now, Chris Omni has been involved with fitness as a personal trainer and the founder of a health campaign called “Makin Moves.”

It’s a program that helps those who want to lose weight,  and makes breaking a sweat fun.

Omni says these county rankings could be changed with one step.

” Get….up ……..the…. couch…..five simple words. A lot of people talk about wanting to lose weight, but not everybody puts the money and the effort behind it.”

That’s why the “Makin Moves” program offers free group fitness classes, 6 days a week at this Trinity Presbyterian Church.

From group walks, to kickboxing it’s just another way the community can keep active.

But Omni says, more needs to be done.

” If other people can come on board and say, that you know what I like what you’re doing can you bring this er to the east side? Can you take this to the North side? I think that’s where we’re missing the boat.”

A first timer in the class, Angeline Gleason says, she’s glad her daughter pushed her to go.

” I can no longer sit by and say, well a little bit of walking is going to suffice. It’s not, I need to eat healthy. I need to move more, I need to be around more for my children, I need to be active.”

As the campaign slogan says,  Stop makin excuses and start makin moves.
