Topekan aims for shot at American Ninja Warrior title

“This is my year man,” Chris Okruhlik, said. “This is my year.”

Topeka’s Chris Okruhlik is getting ready for his third attempt at American Ninja Warrior, a sports entertainment competition on NBC.

American Ninja Warrior is a four stage obstacle course that started in Japan in 1997.

“It’s basically it challenges endurance, grip strength, lower body agility, and just a lot of mental challenges go along with it,” Okruhlik, said.

To make it on the show you first have to submit a tryout video.

“Climbing vines, climbing on ledges – Just trying to find anything I could to simulate what a ninja would do,” Okruhlik, said.

Chris will first go through a qualifying round in Denver before making the finals in Las Vegas.  He hopes to make history on his third time around.

“Three people have ever completed the course,” Okruhlik, said. “No American has yet. That’s what they’ve put a $500,000 bounty on it basically, to see if they can get an American to complete it.”

And if you watch this season and you’re looking for Chris, he won’t be too hard to find.

“I wear a sleeveless tuxedo shirt when I go on,” Okruhlik, said. “I just try to keep it classy, and have a little fun while I’m at it.”

After beginning the competition he must remain tight-lipped because the show has a $1 million fine if any contestant leaks information about the results.

Even though he’s all about having a good time on the show, he doesn’t lack the desire to win.

“I will be the first American Ninja Warrior,” Okruhlik, said.
