Brownback proclaims June as Safety and Awareness Month

Kansas Governor Sam Brownback and the Kansas Department of Labor (KDOL) Division of Industrial Safety and Health (ISH) have proclaimed June as “Safety and Awareness Month.” ISH ask all Kansans to feel a personal responsibility not only for their own safety, but for that of their coworkers, family and friends.

The mission of ISH is to continuously improve workplace safety and health among Kansas workers through promoting awareness, providing program assistance; and performing air and noise sampling.

“ISH identified a total of 4,601 workplace hazards in 2012,” said Lana Gordon, Secretary of Labor. “More than 1,200 employers requested consultations on safety and health each year; evolving a safety program mentality to a safety culture reality.”

The Division of Industrial Safety and Health has established an exemplary Safety and Health Achievement Recognition Program (SHARP) currently distinguishing 175 Kansas employers for the award, the highest number of SHARP sites in the U.S. These distinguished employers include 69 grain handling facilities, 30 energy facilities including power/gas distribution and ethanol plants, 22 health care facilities and 54 manufacturing and automotive facilities.

The SHARP program provides incentives and support to small, high-hazard employers to work with their employees to develop, implement and continuously improve the effectiveness of their workplace safety and health programs.
