Olathe event to attract K-9 teams from across US

OLATHE, Kan. (AP) – Police K-9 teams from across the U.S. are traveling to northeast Kansas this week for the national conference of the North American Police Work Dog Association.

The gathering is being hosted by the Olathe  Police Department in Johnson County.

Participants will receive training and certification in several areas, including police patrol scenarios and tactical techniques. There also will be sections on such specialties as detecting narcotics, explosives and accelerants.

The association was formed in 1977 to help train police work dog teams, establish standards through an accreditation program and improve the public image of K-9 units.

The conference was opening Monday and concludes Friday. A public demonstration by the dogs and their handlers is scheduled Thursday night.
