Wichita State head baseball coach Gene Stephenson will not return to the Shockers after spending 36 seasons with the team.
“I love Wichita, I love Wichita State, I love all the players and they’re all like sons to me,” Stephenson said during his emotional press conference.
Stephenson led the Shockers to seven appearances at the College World Series and won the school’s lone NCAA National Championship in 1989.
“I wish the program the very best, the University the very best,” Stephenson said. “Thank You.”
Wichita State (39-28) claimed the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament title and were eliminated from the NCAA Regional in Manhattan over the weekend with losses to K-State and Arkansas.
