Kansas State junior outfielder Jared King was selected in the fifth round of the 2013 Major League Baseball First Year Player Draft by the New York Mets with the 146th overall pick Friday afternoon.

King, selected as a left fielder, is the fifth Wildcat drafted in the top-five rounds since 2009 and is the highest K-State player drafted since his older brother, Jason (Detroit), and Evan Marshall (Arizona) were each taken in the fourth round in 2011. King is only the third K-State player selected by the Mets, joining outfielder Greg Korbe (1978) and pitcher Lance Hoge (2009).

A native of Dublin, Ohio, King enters the Corvallis Super Regional with a .327 batting average, 15 doubles, two triples, six home runs and 51 RBI. Named the Big 12 Co-Scholar Athlete of the Year, King ranks in the top 10 of the conference in eight offense categories, including a second-place mark in RBI. King was also a First Team All-Big 12 selection and a member of the NCAA Manhattan All-Regional team.

King holds a career batting average of .339 with 42 doubles, eight triples, 21 home runs and 138 RBI. He ranks 10th in school history with 71 career extra-base hits and is one home run shy of entering the school’s career top 10. As a sophomore, King earned Second Team All-Big 12 honors and was an ABCA First Team All-Midwest Region honoree.

No. 13 Kansas State faces third-ranked Oregon State in a best-of-three series for the right to advance to the 2013 College World Series, Saturday through Monday, at Goss Stadium in Corvallis, Ore. The Super Regional begins with a 6 p.m. (CT) contest Saturday, while Game Two is slated for 9 p.m. (CT) Sunday. If necessary, Game Three will be played at 6 p.m. (CT) Monday. All three games will be shown on ESPNU and can be heard on both the K-State Sports Network and www.k-statesports.com.
