Gbagbo-allied youth leader arrested in Ivory Coast

ABIDJAN, Ivory Coast (AP) — A government spokesman in Ivory Coast says that authorities had arrested a youth leader from former President Laurent Gbagbo’s political party on suspicion that he was involved in “destabilization activities” last month.

Bruno Kone said Monday the arrest of Justin Koua was carried out Friday and that police were continuing to investigate to see if there was enough evidence to charge him. He declined to provide details.

Gbagbo’s Ivorian Popular Front political party denounced the arrest as politically motivated, something Kone denied.

A new report from Doudou Diene, the United Nations independent expert on human rights in Ivory Coast, says the government of President Alassane Ouattara has restricted the activity of political parties in part by arresting members without charge “or under the generic charge of damaging state security.”
