Pop-up showers keep area crops growing

After several rounds of showers and storms over the last few weeks, including some locally heavy rains as late as midday Monday, area crops are thriving.

Much of Northeast Kansas has been removed from the US Drought Monitor’s listed areas of drought, after an 18-month long drought gripped much of the region. While minor drought conditions persist over the southern counties, there has been some overall improvement for all areas.

Additional rains in the forecast may add to the totals during the middle of the week, but summer heat can quickly reverse the improvements. Severe drought conditions persist throughout Western Kansas and can often expand during the summer months.
