US won’t sweeten nuke offer for Iran’s next leader

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Obama administration won’t welcome the election of a relative moderate as Iran’s next president with any new nuclear offer. A State Department spokeswoman says it’s up to Tehran to compromise.

Jen Psaki (SAH’-kee) told reporters Monday the U.S. is open to new nuclear talks with Iran. But Washington and its international partners first want a response to an offer of sanctions relief for Iranian nuclear concessions they presented in April.

The U.S. fears Iran may be developing nuclear weapons. Iran says its program is for peaceful energy and research purposes.

Iranian cleric Hasan Rowhani’s election win has raised hopes of greater flexibility, even if Iran’s ayatollah makes all final decisions on the matter.

Psaki said the U.S. won’t sweeten any offers..
