Topeka, Kan. Penwell-Gabel Cemetery & Mausoleum will host the second annual Summer Soulstice Art Fair on Friday, June 21, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Cemetery with the Ducks at Sixth and Gage Blvd. The event is free and open to the public.
The outdoor event will feature nationally acclaimed artist Stephen T. Johnson and local artists who will do a landscape painting at the event.
The Mulvane Art Museum will sponsor a children’s tent, and live music and refreshments will be offered.
Johnson is a versatile artist in various mediums, including painting, collage, drawing, sculpture and installations, and award-winning children’s books. His work is featured in many private and permanent collections, including the National Portrait Gallery at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., and the New Britain Museum of Art, New Britain, Conn. Solo exhibitions of Johnson’s work have also been featured in the Memorial Art Gallery at the University of Rochester, Rochester, N.Y.; Katonah Museum of Art, Katonah, N.Y.; and the Spencer Museum of Art at the University of Kansas.
“We wanted to put this event together to offer a wide array of artists a venue to come together and display their talents and to also expose the community to art being created right before their eyes,” said Ren Newcomer, owner of Penwell-Gabel Funeral Homes, Crematory & Cemeteries.
