KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – A Missouri mother and daughter are being held without bond until a preliminary hearing next month on charges that they fatally poisoned two family members and tried to kill another.
Diane Staudte (STOW’-dee) and her 22-year-old daughter, Rachel Staudte, were arraigned yesterday. Each is charged with two counts of first-degree murder, one count of first-degree assault and one count of armed criminal action.
Prosecutors say they used antifreeze to poison Diane Staudte’s husband, who died in April 2012, her 26-year-old son, who died in September, and her 24-year-old daughter, who survived.
According to a probable cause statement, Diane Staudte told investigators Thursday that she poisoned her husband with antifreeze because she hated him, and killed her son because he was — quote — “worse than a pest.” Investigators say she also admitted poisoning her daughter Sarah because “she would not get a job and had student loa! ns that had to be paid.”
Authorities say Diane Staudte initially took the blame for all three poisonings, but Rachel Staudte later told police that she had been involved as well.
