Wife: Hastings wasn’t reporting on Jill Kelley

Michael Hastings

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Journalist Michael Hastings’ wife says her husband was not working on a story about Florida socialite Jill Kelley when he died in a single-car wreck in Los Angeles last week.

Elise Jordan tweeted Tuesday that she wanted to correct the record after seeing erroneous reports. Jordan declined to comment.

The 33-year-old Hastings’ Rolling Stone article on Army Gen. Stanley McChrystal led to his resignation as U.S. commander of coalition forces in Afghanistan.

Hastings emailed colleagues on June 17 warning them that the “Feds” are interviewing his “close friends and associates.” Editor Ben Smith confirmed he received the email.

At 4:20 a.m. the next day Hastings’ car hit a tree and caught fire. Investigators said there doesn’t appear to be any foul play.

The FBI said Hastings was never under investigation.
