A handful of fireworks stands are open again after being briefly shut down by the Kansas State Department of Revenue this morning.

According to a spokeswoman, five Kelly’s Wholesale Fireworks Stands in Topeka and Shawnee County were temporarily closed for failure to pay past state sales taxes for the stands in the years of 2010, 2011 and 2012.

The amount owed came to just more than $82, 500.

The spokeswoman told Kansas First News the stands’ owner, Charles Copeland of Osage City and the State were able to come to an agreement to pay the past taxes and were allowed to re-open.

Charles Copeland tells Kansas First News that it is a clerical error and they have paid taxes.

Copeland and the Department of Revenue plan to work out the situation after the fourth of July.
