The 17th annual Spirit of Kansas Festival at Lake Shawnee is in the history books – and this year it brought out 6,000 more people than last year.
According to the Shawnee County Parks and Recreation Department, 54,000 people turned out for the festivities through out the day.
That’s up compared to 48,000 people last year.
The car show and craft festival saw around 8,000 visitors.
About 21,000 people were at Lake Shawnee to watch the fireworks show..and it’s estimated that 18,000 people watched from surrounding neighborhoods.
Crews out at the lake were able to clear the crowds in about an hour… and approximately 640 people took advantage of the bus shuttle service offered by Topeka Metro.
Shawnee County reported that the exit plan worked well except halfway into exiting when a minor accident occured, slowing down the process slightly.
