Connor Murray silenced the bats of the Valley Center Diamond Dawgs as the KU pitcher helped the Topeka Golden Giants take a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three series of the Walter Johnson League Championship, winning 6-0 in a 7-inning run-rule.
Washburn catcher Pete Sorrentino hit a two-out, two-RBI double in the 2nd inning to give Topeka a 2-0 lead.
In the third, the Golden Giants scored on a bunt single courtesy of a throwing error by the Valley Center pitcher.
Then, former Shawnee Heights product and Washburn Ichabod Connor Crimmins added to the lead as he provided an RBI single to right field to make it 4-0 in favor of the Golden Giants.
Topeka travels to Valley Center on Tuesday for game two of the series. Game three, if necessary, is at Bettis Family Sports Complex on Wednesday.
