Half a million dollars is digging into downtown Rossville. This comes after the city received a federal grant for a new streetscape design.

Owner of Grounded Coffee House in Rossville, Sarene McCrory says with a new downtown on the horizon, steady business could get even better.

“You see other small towns that have really nice quaint downtown areas and I really think Rossville would benefit from that.”

More than $500,000 in federal funding combined with more than $100,000 from this city will replace cracked sidewalks and curbs, update old light fixtures and install a new sound system.

“Anytime there’s a change going on, people are interested, they like to take part of that, they like to get involved in it, they like to make it their own,” says store manager at Doug’s Pharmacy, Barb Newsham, “And being a lifelong resident of Rossville, it would be fun to see a new change.”

Rossville Mayor Ken Wichman says it’s been a while since the area has seen renovations.

“I would probably say there hasn’t been anything done around downtown since late 60s,” he says.

He hopes the changes bring tenants and businesses to vacant spaces.

“We do have some empty buildings and hopefully maybe some new business might want to move in,” he says.

McCrory says the project will make the city even more prideful than it already is.

“I think that’s everybody’s hope, that it’ll bring in more people, more business from outside, just make our town shine a little bit more and show what we do have to offer,” McCrory says.

This is one of 35 projects the Kansas Department of Transportation is choosing to help fun across the state.

Wichman says the portion of funding from the city will come from a 2 mill increase that was implemented last year.
