Amnesty official in Russia plans to meet Snowden

MOSCOW (AP) — American espionage suspect Edward Snowden will be meeting with a Russian official from Amnesty International today.

The Interfax news agency says the meeting will take place at Moscow’s international airport, where Snowden is believed to have been stuck as he tries to negotiate for asylum in another country. Interfax says Snowden has asked to meet with several human rights organizations, including Transparency International and Human Rights Watch.

Snowden has not been seen in public since arriving in Moscow from Hong Kong, where he fled before his disclosures about American Internet surveillance programs were made public.

Venezuela, Nicaragua and Bolivia have said they would be willing to grant asylum to Snowden. But it is unclear if Snowden could fly from Moscow to any of those countries without passing through the airspace of the United States or allied countries.
