An alternative method of medical treatment is making the Capital City its headquarters.

The American Holistic Nurses Association just moved from Arizona to be in a more central location and the group’s president says being in America’s Heartland is the perfect place for it.

“The basis is really the philosophy of care that attends to the whole person,” says president of the American Holistic Nurses Association, Peggy Burkhardt. She says the Holism approach provides different treatment than conventional health care.

“It wouldn’t just come in and say okay, you have high blood pressure, here’s a pill, go home and take it,” Burkhardt says, “We would start looking at, well what are the dietary changes you can make, what are some behavioral changes.”

The group is bringing this method to Topeka.

“It’s the heartland and holistic care is heart centered care, it uses the head but it also comes from that sense of appreciating that we really need to relate to people as true people at their essence, to be with them at the heart as well as the head,” says Burkhardt.

With heath care changing across the country, she expects benefits of holism in the future.

“I see holistic nurses as being really key to the future of health care because of the fact that we look at the whole person, body mind and spirit and try to find the resources that support the whole person and the big emphasis is on prevention,” Burkhardt says.

The care spreads from patients to the nurses themselves.

“If I’m not healthy, it’s going to be hard for me to help somebody else be healthy,” she adds.

The Sunflower state – a place Burkhardt believes this treatment will thrive on.

“People of Kansas, that’s just people who are very genuine and that’s what holistic nursing is all about, is being your truest self.”
There are three chapters of AHNA in Kansas and about 35 accredited nursing schools which Burkhardt hopes to create relationships with.
