2 dead after police open fire in Bangladesh

DHAKA, Bangladesh (AP) — Police say they have opened fire on opposition supporters marching in southwestern Bangladesh during a daylong general strike, killing two.

Police official Tajul Islam says the violence took place Tuesday in Satkhira district when hundreds of Jamaat-e-Islami party supporters started attacking police during the march.

He says several people have been injured in the melee.

The Islamic party was enforcing the strike to protest against the jailing of its former chief Ghulam Azam for his role during the country’s independence war against Pakistan in 1971.

A special tribunal on Monday sentenced the 91-year-old Azam to 90 years in jail but his supporters denounced the verdict.

The verdict has also enraged supporters who demanded death penalty for Azam.
