Back to school is still a ways out but a schedule change for the 501 District has volunteers already planning for a new routine.

Last night, volunteers with the First United and Oakland United Methodist Churches met at State Street Elementary School getting ready for the school year.

This year, USD 501 elementary schools will start at 9:20 a.m. on Wednesdays, instead of 8:20 so teachers can collaborate.

These volunteers will be providing a free hour of daycare at State Street to help out families who need someone to watch their children mid-week for that hour.

“They want it to be different from school to have a different feel than what they’ll typically be doing at school, said State Street Elementary Principal, Sarah Sharp.  Something that is safe and fun for them to do during that hour in that time slot on Wednesdays.”

The free program will last for the entire year and organizers estimate it will see about 340 kids.

Volunteers must pass a safe and sacred course that includes a background check.
