Name of man killed in Officer-involved shooting released

Daniel E. DeLong, 56, of Topeka, has been identified as the person involved in the incident at the Knightsbridge Manor Apartments on July 29th, 2013.  A Topeka Police Officer fired their duty weapon, striking Mr. DeLong, after Mr. DeLong charged officers with a knife.  Mr. DeLong was pronounced dead at the scene as a result of his wounds.

Topeka Police Officers arrived at the Knights Manor Apartments at 501 Franklin yesterday morning at 9:34 after the management of the complex called concerning the welfare of a male subject being aggressive.

The male subject ran out carrying a knife chasing three TPD Officers and a Topeka citizen.  One Officers fired multiple shots.

The male subject died on the scene.  The name of the subject is not being released at this time.  TPD did attempt medical assistance on the subject.

The Police Officers nor the citizen were injured.

The names of the officers and the citizen involved are not being released at this time as well.

Topeka Police Chief Ron Miller says  this is the first incident of this magnitude since the December 16, 2012 shootings in which two TPD officers were killed in the line of duty.


TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — Topeka police chief Ron Miller says a city police officer shot and killed a man who charged at officers and bystanders with a knife.

The shooting happened Monday morning at the Knightsbridge Apartments in Topeka.

Miller says three officers went to the complex after management asked police to check on a resident who was acting strangely. Miller says the man was combative with police officers and told them to go away.

He says the man eventually chased officers and other residents with the knife, prompting one officer to fire several shots. The man was pronounced dead at the scene. His name has not been released.

The officer who fired the shots is on administrative leave.
