Opponents file suit against NYC plan for new taxis

NEW YORK (AP) — Opponents of New York City’s plan for a mandatory uniform fleet of yellow taxis have filed a lawsuit to block it.

The suit was filed Wednesday by the Greater New York Taxi Association and medallion owner Evgeny “Gene” Freidman.

It claims the plan oversteps Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s authority under the law.

Association Executive Director Ethan Gerber tells The Wall Street Journal (http://on.wsj.com/141Xr38 ) the plan improperly forces cab drivers to buy a van they don’t want and give up the hybrids that are on the road.

The so-called Taxi of Tomorrow, a Nissan NV-200, is slated to roll out in October.

The city’s Taxi and Limousine Commission called the group’s latest lawsuit “another misguided attempt to deprive New Yorkers of the safest, most comfortable custom-built new taxicab.”
