Head of Rio de Janeiro police fired after amnesty

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — The head of Brazilian military police in Rio de Janeiro has been forced from his job. The announcement comes after word that the commander had decreed an amnesty for police officers who committed undefined “administrative” infractions since 2011.

Col. Erir da Costa Filho was fired Monday after meeting with Jose Beltrame, the top security official for Rio de Janeiro state.

Beltrame had publicly questioned Costa’s decree to give officers amnesty and demanded explanations for exactly what infractions were forgiven. No details have been made public.

The move comes as police in Rio face widespread criticism for violent crackdowns on anti-government protests that broke out in June. Videos of police randomly using tear gas and rubber bullets on seemingly peaceful protesters have been widely distributed on social media networks in Brazil.
