Private donations to Kansas Avenue Renovations are starting to roll in.

City and state leaders just revealed how much money has been raised.

So far the total is a little more than 1.6 million dollars.  The Downtown Topeka Foundation made a promise of 1.8 million and there’s still time to raise more.

In December the city council approved a near five million dollar budget for improvements to Kansas Avenue.

Some of those improvements will include new curbs and sidewalks, mid-block pavilions and improved infrastructure.

President and CEO of Downtown Topeka Inc. says the improvements are much needed.

“What’s underneath this street is decades old and it’s just not functioning for the businesses downtown, says Vince Frye. Above that we will narrow the street from five lanes to three.  We will expand the sidewalk to 24 feet or so but will continue our fundraising efforts we’ve met with many of the businesses up and down to talk about the project.  This is the communities downtown.”

Frye says a number of businesses have already put money towards this project and he hopes it will attract new businesses.

There is no exact start date set but the project will be divided into two construction years.  East half starting in early 2014 and the west half replaced in late 2015.
