Man arrested after resisting rescue in Kan. river

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — A 35-year-old man is in custody after Wichita police say he resisted efforts to rescue him from the Arkansas River.

KWCH-TV reports ( ) a witness alerted police to a man giving what looked like a distress signal around 8:30 a.m. Friday as he floated down the river on an inflatable object.

Firefighters in boats threw ropes to the man but said he refused to grab the ropes and continued floating. More than 20 rescue workers were involved before the man finally surrendered and was brought to shore.

Police said the man had several warrants out for his arrest. He also faces possible charges for failing to obey an officer and being in the river.
