MARYSVILLE, KS — After 60 years of service, a Marshall County pool will be closing its doors for good this Sunday. But as Kansas First News Reporter, Nicolette Schleisman found out, it will re-open next summer with a brand new “face.”

A familiar summer hot spot will be closing its doors for good Sunday. The Marysville Pool was first built in the 1930’s, and was renovated in the 1950’s.  Now, after 60 years it is time for a brand new pool.

“When we have an older facility like that, it presents challenges just in our day-to-day operations,” said Maria Seematter.

Maria Seematter is the pool manager; about 7 years ago, she was on the committee that started the first initial meetings for a new pool.

She says new features, like a deeper deep end and a zero entry, or a pool that gradually slopes from the deck into deeper water, like a beach, will help attract new visitors to the pool.

“It’s going to be easier to teach kids how to swim and easily accessible for them and their parents,” said Seematter.

The pool will cost $3.55 million, and will be paid for through bonds and the city’s sales tax. But city administrator, Rick Shain, says the cost of the renovation will be well worth it.

“We’re hoping we bring people form around the surrounding area that aren’t coming here now, or that may be going to another pool that could come here. So we’re hoping to increase the attendance,” said Shain.

And young pool fans, like Brooklynn and Makenna Nelson say they are excited already for the new pool.

“[I’m excited for] Toys! Slide! Water park!” said the Nelsons.

Demolition is set to begin the week of August 19th. The pool is expected to be complete by May 8th.

A price for the pool has not yet been set. The City Council will decide how much it will charge before the pool opens Memorial Day Weekend.

If you are planning on heading to the pool before it closes Sunday, it is open from 1:00-8:00 P.M. both days.
