Cop cams ordered to help fix NYC stop-and-frisk

NEW YORK (AP) — A federal judge has ruled that the New York Police Department must start a pilot program of body-worn cameras for some precincts.

The program is part of the training and supervision reforms the judge ordered after she found the department has been wrongly stopping blacks and Hispanics under its stop-and-frisk program.

Body cameras have been successful in smaller departments where officials say they help keep tabs on both the behavior of officers and the public.

But officials in New York are skeptical and say the city already has thousands of cameras recording people in public.
