St. Marys endured its ups and downs after the Bears moved to Class 3A last season. They went (4-6) but managed to earn a pair of victories against district opponents.

“We have 15 seniors which is a good number of seniors for a school our size and guys that have put their time in the weight room and I think they’re ready to go,” St. Marys head coach Kevin Kinderknecht said. “We look forward to the year getting going and we have Centralia to start out the season so we’ll find out real quick how good we are right off the bat.”

Last year, all four victories for the Bears were by a large margin. Players and coaches hope for a carry over to this season.

“Go 100 percent every play,” St. Marys senior wide receiver/defensive back Cole Simecka said. “If you’re not going 100 percent you might as well not be out here. If you don’t want to commit to this team then something is wrong.”

St. Marys won three games by more than 40 points, including a pair of shutouts, and the other victory came by 31 points.

“Get good practices in, we need everyone going 100 percent so we can get out there and win,” St. Marys senior offensive lineman/defensive end Andrew Unzueta said.

The Bears know the challenge of the Mid-East League and look to improve off last year’s lone victory against league opponents.

“Our league is obviously one of the top 3A leagues in the state of Kansas,” Kinderknecht said. “You’re going to get it every Friday night and this year will be no exception.”
