TOPEKA, KS — One local Topeka Coffee store won’t be grinding it’s beans much longer. Kaner Coffee is closing after 20 years of serving coffee and homemade pastries.

“We’re kind of distraught… you build up kind of a family deal, and now we got to find some place to keep that family,” said Charles Meyers.

For 20 years, Charles Myers has been going to Kaner Coffee, during those years, he got more than just the grounds.

The friendships Myers and their other loyal customers have made is why its been so hard for current store owners, Amy Manrose and her husband, to close their doors for good Monday.

After the store’s landlord increased the lease contract to 10 years, and raised the cost of rent, Manrose and her husband could not sell it. And, they could not afford to keep it running.

“It just ruined our business. So instead we had to close the doors,” said Manrose.

Manrose has been getting up at 3:45 in the morning the last five years, baking pastries and getting the store ready for their loyal customers. She says knowing the end is near is bittersweet.

“I feel bad that we only had it for 5 years. And that its not going to go on anymore. i really wish that we could have found a way to keep it going,” said Manrose

Kaner coffee has been brewing up business since 1994, when Bill Kaner first opened his doors. That is when Myers started going, and now that his home away from home is closing, he says he is not worried about losing touch with the friends he has made over the years.

“We’ll end up like a flock of birds. Probably at the same place. Most of us,” said Meyers.

And Myers hopes Manrose will join them as well, to talk over a cup of coffee.

Kaner Coffee will be open from 7 to 4 Saturday and Sunday, and until the coffee runs dry on Monday.
