We’re now two weeks away from kicking off the high school football regular season.

As we continue to preview teams across the area, let’s meet our first team from the Big Seven league, the Perry-Lecompton Kaws.

The Kaws are coming off a rebuilding season after they finished 3-6 in 2012. Before last year, Perry-Lecompton had made the playoffs the last two seasons.

Head coach Mike Paramore is excited about this year’s bunch and looks forward to making a run and returning to the postseason in 2013.

“Our senior guys this year have done a great job,” Paramore said. “They’ve really stepped up and they’re doing a great job with the younger guys. They set the tempo of how we practice and how we do things just not on the football field, but off the football field.  I love the way they’re going about their business.”

The senior class will have the responsibility of carrying the team to the next level.

“We’re trying to like beat the heat,” said Austin Jantz, senior guard and linebacker. “We’re being more physical and coach is holding us more accountable. It builds leadership.”

And leadership is one of the main things the Kaws are trying to improve from last season.

“This year’s leadership is good,” said Brendon Neal, senior tackle.  “We bond a lot better and it’s going to make us better as a team. It’s a team sport so everybody has to be on the same page.”

“I really stress the consistency,” Paramore said.  “We were too erratic last season.  We just want to make sure we play steady, play even, and go out every Friday night and give great effort.”
