Poland’s PM Tusk wins party leadership challenge

WARSAW, Poland (AP) — Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has handily won a party vote but is still facing other challenges as his government loses popularity halfway through its second term.

Tusk gathered some 80 percent of the votes in the ruling Civic Platform’s election of leader, while challenger Jaroslaw Gowin got 20 percent, according to results released Friday.

Observers said Gowin’s result indicated the size of in-party opposition to Tusk, whose government has been criticized for a series of unpopular decisions.

Tusk’s government is cutting spending to counter a recently revealed increase in the country’s budget deficit, leading to speculation that Finance Minister Jacek Rostowski will eventually have to go.
