Bill Snyder named Jake Waters as the starting quarterback for the Wildcats to begin the season.

“Our guys are good about being able to have respect to whoever it is,” Snyder said. “They respected the competition between the two, they respected both of the quarterbacks. Jake himself a lot on his plate. He’s trying to develop the global picture of our offense and how to understand defenses, which he’s made extremely fine progress at.”

Waters helped lead Iowa Western Community College to an undefeated national championship.

“Seeing Jake grow since he got here in the spring to now, you can see that he has been really having that desire and hunger to want to be better – to make everybody around him better,” Kansas State junior wide receiver Tyler Lockett said. “You see him in the film room day-in and day-out really trying to have an understanding of what the offense consists of and being the best quarterback that he can be. That is something you really want in a player.”

The first game in a Wildcat uniform for Waters will come against the two-time defending FCS national champion North Dakota State Bison on Friday night.

“When he (Waters) makes a mistake he wants to learn from it immediately,” Kansas State junior offensive lineman B.J. Finney said. “Coach Snyder felt that he was the best fit for this offense for this game and that’s just who we have to protect now.”
