PERRY, KS — The unofficial end to summer. Labor Day Weekend marks what many consider to be the last hurrah of the season.

But it’s not all celebrations, this year, business was down at Lake Perry.

It is the sound of summer, boats and jet-skis out on the lake, and swimmers dipping their toes into the water.

But this summer, fewer people came out to Lake Perry Yacht and Marina.

“Overall we’re probably down 10% from last year. Not terribly much, but enough to be noticeable,” said Mike Stanley, Store Manager for Lake Perry Yacht and Marina.

Because of the cooler weather this summer, lake officials say this Labor Day Weekend brought more visitors to the lake than any other weekend this season.

“It’s had its challenges with the cold spring, the long spring, you might say March lasted 67 days, and with a rather slow Memorial Day to start of the summer,” said Stanley.

“All that rain kind of put a delay on stuff and we just haven’t had time,” said lake visitor, Cody Palmer.

Boaters say the weather left them traveling somewhere else.

“We’ve hit a few lakes, we just went to Grand Lake in Oklahoma. But other than that we haven’t really visited any Kansas lakes,” said Palmer.

Marina officials say that after the Fourth of July, visitor turn out increased.

“We’ve had a good summer ever since then. but with the slow start its kind of hard to make up that difference,” said Palmer.

People are hitting the lake trying to catch the last few rays before autumn begins.
