TOPEKA, KS — Three men are still on the loose Thursday night after police say they shot and killed a Topeka man in his house.

It happened early Thursday morning, at a home on Arter Avenue.

Police say 29-year-old Juan Solis was shot and killed inside his home at around 6:30 Thursday morning, during a home invasion. Neighbors on Arter Avenue say they have always looked out for each other. But after Thursday morning, their peaceful street was rocked.

It started like any other normal day in Oakland’s Garden Park.

“It was quiet like it normally is in the morning times, unfortunately when we got out to take the boys to school, that was when we noticed all the police vehicles and everything,” said Jonny Madrid, a neighbor.

Over at 447 NE Arter: a crime scene. Someone had called 911 with the report of a home invasion and shooting.
There, police on scene found 29-year-old Juan Pablo Solis alive, who had been shot in his home. A short time later, Solis died.

Four children and an adult were in the house at the time – and were not injured.

“This stretch of Arter has been peaceful for as long as I can remember,” said Madrid.

It is a neighborhood where parents are not afraid of letting their kids play outside.

“We’ve got children that ride their bicycles up and down this street all day every day. And I’ve got a newborn child at my house that I’ve got to watch out for, so actually seeing something like this so close to home, it does kind of strike a nerve,” said Madrid,

Neighbors say they are shocked their friend they grew up is now dead.  Several people we spoke with off camera, because they feared retaliation, say they saw suspicious behavior across their peaceful street.

Leaving the quiet neighborhood to cope with their loss.

Police are not releasing much information about what happened. They are saying this doesn’t appear to be a random act.

The suspects police are looking for are three black males, who were wearing masks at the time of the invasion. If you have any information you’re asked to contact detectives at 785-368-9400 or Crime Stoppers at 785-234-0007.
