Date set for new indictment in Blackwater shooting

WASHINGTON (AP) — A judge has given federal prosecutors until next month to present a new indictment against ex-Blackwater Worldwide security contractors accused in a 2007 shooting of Iraqi civilians.

U.S. District Judge Royce Lamberth on Tuesday set an Oct. 21 date for a new indictment against the guards. They were charged in Washington after a shooting at Nisoor Square killed 17 civilians.

A different judge dismissed the first set of charges, but a federal appeals court in 2011 reversed that decision and resurrected the case.

Prosecutors said in court Tuesday that their presentation to the grand jury was essentially complete, but they need Justice Department officials to sign off on the charges.

The Virginia-based private security firm changed its name to Xe and is now known as Academi.
