Carmaker saves West Texas drive-in theater

GRAHAM, Texas (AP) — An automaker has presented a West Texas drive-in theater with a digital projector, preserving its access to Hollywood fare despite an end to 35mm film distribution.

A Friday statement by Honda says its Project Drive-In chose the Graham Drive-In as the third of five U.S. outdoor theaters to be presented with the new-age projectors.

Movie studios are phasing out 35 mm film prints, and the switch to all-digital distribution is pushing the outdoor theaters with huge screens to make the expensive change to digital projectors. However, industry observers say many of the 350 or so of theaters still operating could be forced to close because they can’t afford the expensive technology.

Graham is a town of about 10,000 residents about 80 miles northwest of Fort Worth.
