Popular radio closes in protest in Guinea-Bissau

BISSAU, Guinea-Bissau (AP) — A popular radio in Guinea-Bissau says that they are shutting down their station to protest the police interrogation of a commentator on one of their weekly programs.

The staff of Bombolom FM said Friday they are outraged by the questioning of Justino Sa, who angered the country’s powerful army in comments he made over the weekend. Sa criticized the army during his show by pointing out that the number of officers in Guinea-Bissau’s military is greater than the number of rank-and-file soldiers, a statistic confirmed by diplomats.

The statement from the radio station said the staff feel “handcuffed” by the measures taken against Sa, who was interrogated most recently on Wednesday. The case has been transferred to the justice system.

Guinea-Bissau’s military led a coup most recently in April 2012.
