Fire in North Topeka classified as arson

On September 18, 2013 the Topeka Police responded to a report of a house fire at 1928 NE Monroe St.

The Topeka Fire Department was dispatched on the report of a structure fire with possible fire victims inside.  The Topeka Police Officer on scene attempted to enter the structure and located the resident, who eventually self-evacuated the dwelling.

Suppression crews arrived on the scene to find heavy smoke and flames coming from the interior of the dwelling.  Suppression crews initiated an interior attack of the fire, while rescue crews simultaneously preformed a primary and secondary search of the dwelling.  The fire was quickly extinguished, confining the damage to the structure of origin.  Primary and secondary searches revealed no fire victims were present within the dwelling.

A Fire investigator was requested and responded to the scene.  Investigation revealed the origin of the fire was in the approximate center of a bedroom located in the northwest corner of the dwelling.  This fire is being classified as incendiary

Additional Information:

  • Four (4) Engines, Two (2) Truck Companies, Two (2) Chief Officers, One (1) Topeka Fire Investigator, One (1) Kansas State Fire Marshal Investigator.
  • One (1) fire victim was transported to a local hospital with non-life life threatening injuries
  • Damage is estimated at $45,000.00 Structure and $10,000.00 Content
