A Topeka group that works to eliminate prejudice will now include protecting those in the lesbian, gay and trans-gender community.

The Topeka City Council approved an ordinance 6-2 that adds the terms “gender identity and sexual orientation” into the role of the Human Relations Commission Tuesday night.

By doing so, council member Chad Manspeaker says it will work to fight prejudice against those in the l-g-b-t community.

The commission uses education programs to teach awareness of other religions and races.

Manspeaker says adding the l-g-b-t community is a priority.

Nearly 20 people…both for and against the ordinance spoke during the meeting.

Manspeaker says… typically the actions of city council are immediate and he believes that to be the case here.
