Kansas Lottery holding $1M unclaimed prize

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — Kansas Lottery officials are urging residents to check their pockets, dashboards and bags to see who is holding a Powerball ticket worth $1 million.

Lottery spokeswoman Sally Lunsford says Tuesday that the ticket is valid only through Jan. 27, 2014, one year after it was sold.

Lunsford says it is unusual for the lottery to still be holding the winnings for such a large prize, though it frequently has several unclaimed $10,000 prizes that aren’t quickly claimed.

The winning Powerball ticket was sold somewhere in southwest Kansas. The winning numbers are 3-22-26-41-49 with the Powerball of 18. To win $1 million the ticket must match the first five numbers drawn but not the Powerball number.

TOPEKA, KAN. – More than a million dollars in unclaimed prizes, including a $1 million Powerball ticket, await the lucky Kansas Lottery players who have the winning tickets.  The unclaimed prizes, which are listed on the Lottery’s website under Unclaimed Prizes, are from past Powerball, Hot Lotto, Super Kansas Cash and Keno drawings.

With online terminal games, players have 365 days from the date of a drawing to claim their prizes.  Online prizes expire after 365 days.  Here are the largest prizes that currently remain unclaimed:

The Lottery advises that players should always sign the back of their tickets at the time of purchase! To see if a ticket is a winner, a player can take it to any Lottery retailer and have it checked on a lottery terminal.  They can also check a ticket themselves with Check-A-Ticket machines located at many retail locations.  Tickets can also be checked on the Kansas Lottery website www.kslottery.com or by calling the Kansas Lottery at 785-296-5700.

Prizes of $599 and lower may be claimed at most retail locations. Players with winning tickets of $600 and more must claim them at a Lottery office, either in person or by mail.

What happens to unclaimed prize money?

By law, unclaimed prize money remains in the prize fund. It shall then be added to the prizes in subsequent Lottery games. The money always remains in the prize fund and can only be used to pay prizes.
