October 2nd is World Reading Day, A Day that encourages adults and kids to turn off their electronics and enjoy a book.

Kansas State University Early Education Instructor Anna Nippert says reading is about more than just enjoying the story.

She says it’s not about reading the book from beginning to end but about enjoying the interaction time with your children.  While you’re reading, stop and look at the pictures and ask the child how they would solve the problem or pretend you’re the character and act it out.  Because it’s not about finishing the story but making it fun.

“Anytime you can make reading interactive, it makes it that much more of a learning opportunity for the children because what we do know about children is that they can become passive very quickly and so if you are just reading the words and if you are just reading the words, it’s very easy for children to zone out.”
