Species may complicate things for bridge project

A threatened species of minnow could complicate things for a Shawnee County bridge project.

The threatened designation of the Topeka Shiner caused Shawnee County to reject bids to replace the southwest Docking Bridge over Mission Creek.

Public Works Director Tom Vlock told Shawnee County commissioners that two bids came back 162 thousand dollars higher than engineer estimates.

The contractors noted a provision in the permits that prohibited them from working in the creek because it’s a fish habitat.

The small minnow was on the country’s endangered species list starting in 1998. It was reduced to “threatened status” in 2010.
