Bomb squad investigated “suspicious device” in North Topeka

The Topeka Police Department’s bomb squad responded to a report of an explosion tonight.

Around 4:30pm Thursday, Topeka Police were dispatched to a report of a suspicious person in the area of the 1300 block of NW Central.

Police say reports also came in of a possible explosion in the area, described as possibly a “cherry bomb.”

Once on scene, officers found a suspicious device lying in the roadway.

The road was temporarily closed for safety and the TPD Bomb Squad was called to determine if the device was hazardous.

The item was determined not to be an explosive device.

Topeka Police say there was some evidence at the scene that a small explosion had taken place. Evidence was collected at the scene and the investigation is still open.
