Jury Duty scams in Shawnee County

There have been two reported instances in rural Shawnee County where citizens were contacted and told they owed fines for missing jury duty.

The individual claims to be a law enforcement officer and provides a phone number.  When connected to the number, there is a series of prompts that eventually requests personal bank information or other methods of payment.

In the event a citizen would fail to appear for jury duty, the Jury Coordinator would initially send a post card with information to contact the Jury Coordinator’s Office.  At no time during this process would a law enforcement officer or jury coordinator contact citizens requesting money for any jury related issues.

Citizens who would like to verify their jury status can visit the Shawnee County Court website at http://www.shawneecourt.org/ and follow the Jury Duty Information link.  Additional information about Federal Courts including an informational video on Juror Scams may be viewed at http://www.uscourts.gov/FederalCourts/JuryService/JurorScams.aspx
